Titled "Art for All: British Posters for Transport," the exhibit includes over 100 posters designed for the Underground and the British railways, many of which have been donated to the British Art Center by Henry S. Hacker '65 B.A.
Others are on loan from the London Transport Museum and the National Railway Museum in York, England.
The show is curated by Teri J. Edelstein of Teri J. Edelstein Museum Strategies, and the center's curator is Scott Wilcox.
In 1908, under the leadership of Frank Pick, the London Underground (later, London Transport) began a promotional campaign "that become one of the most successful, adventurous and best-sustained branding operations ever attempted," according to Wilcox, chief curator of art collections and senior curator of prints and drawings.
"The posters commissioned by Pick engendered goodwill and encouraged ridership on the public transport system. They also helped to foster a civic identity for the city of London."
The featured artists in the exhibition include Edward McKnight Kauffer, Frederick Herrick, Hans Schleger, Anna Zinkeisen, Walter Spradbery, Tom Purvis and Frank Newbould.
